The observatory, within the framework of the Re-City project, is born as an instrument to understand and interpret the evolution of cities in relation to global challenges from the perspective of Social Sustainability. A tool for periodic observation and diagnosis, from the obtaining of data and of sufficient, reliable and comparable information that allows to evaluate the situation of the cities in relation to different from the key issues that determine them. The observatory must also be a tool for monitoring the policies and measures, both public and social initiative or private initiatives that are carried out to meet the current challenges.
For the first challenge: The fight against inequality, the Observatory has established 61 indicators, which collect data on the triggers of inequality and its consequences, based on the conclusions of the lectures of the cycle, literature on the subject and the advice of the Network of Academics.
We have established a pilot test for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, measuring the inequality in the AMB as a whole and also the inequality among its member municipalities. These indicators will be progressively extended to the 137 members of the Metropolitan Network. The Observatory will incorporate indicators of the other challenges (Climatic Change, Technological Innovation and Interculturality) as these develop.
